A Sweet Baby Commission

{Oil on Canvases, 2010}
{Oil on Canvases, 2010}
{Olivia with her daddy, Mao, 2009}
These are a few progress shots of a commission I am doing for a friend's baby room. I'll post them again as soon as they are completely done. I plan to stick with a mostly blue and brown palette, which is the color of her room. Olivia, is around 8 months old and is a real cutie! My husband and I really value the time we get to spend with Olivia and her parents (Anne and Mao). They are a sweet family and really fun to be around.

Dreaming of Spring

{Sketchbook, 2010}
All of our local stores have their seed packets available for the 2010 growing season. I am planning on growing some vegetables this year and am super excited to go get some seeds of my own. Every year when I garden I always dream of the possibilities and look forward to seeing the first seedlings come up out of the earth!

Special Delivery Bird

{Oil on Board, 2010}
This is the painted version of the sketch in my previous post. It was challenging painting an animal with a mostly black body because you have to use highlights and lowlights to describe the form. My favorite part of this illustration is the little fuzz on the bird's chest! I love red winged black birds and I thought that might be a unique species of bird to portray.

Illustration Friday - Adrift

{Sketchbook, 2010}
This little red winged blackbird is adrift as he flies to his next delivery site! I want to try and paint this little sketch next week if I find a little time. I think he would look cute in watercolor or oil. Also, the children's illustrators portfolio site is back up. You can view my portfolio at www.candacecamling.com.

Barbershop Quartet Illustration

{Oil on Board and Digital, 2010}
{Oil on Board, 2010}
I just finished this piece last night and added some details to the background today. I decided to post both pieces so that it is easier to see what parts are digital. Certain elements are just simpler to add digitally. The rays in the background are straight lines that would have taken a long time to paint. The sheet music would have been a nightmare to add in with oil. Instead, I used a piece of antique sheet music that I got at a garage sale for 10 cents last summer! Now, onto the next piece of unfinished art from November and December of 2009!

Illustration Friday - Muddy

{Prisma Pencils on Toned Paper, 2010}
From what I've heard, frogs really enjoy practicing their ballet moves in muddy places. I did a colored pencil piece ( much quicker than paint!) this week because I have some oil pieces in my studio that I would like to finish up fairly soon! You can buy this piece HERE.

Sketchiness

{Ink, 2010}{Graphite, 2010}
{Graphite, 2010}{Acrylic, Graphite, and Ink, 2010}
Some recent drawings from my Moleskine sketchbooks. I'm really trying to draw a little bit every day so that I can get ideas flowing quicker. I know it is really simple, but I like the dinosaur best because it was done in ink pen and I couldn't second guess any lines.

First 2010 Promotional Postcard

{Front of Postcard, 2010}
{Back of Postcard, 2010}
{Watercolor, 2010}
It was important for me to start this year out with a brand spankin' new promotional postcard. I plan to do a few more this year too. I just sent them to the printer, so I really hope that they meet or exceed my expectations. Usually I am pleased with the printer I use, so I will be anxious too see! I only ordered 100 this time, because I usually order way too many and they sit around forever!
